In response to a tragic event in the summer of 2004, Devo spent six months creating KidProtection.org. A three month old baby girl was left in her car seat in central Florida when her father forgot to take her to daycare. By the time her mother figured out she wasn't at daycare, she had died. A simple phone call at 7:30am would have saved her life.
The goal was to create a web-based, automatic monitoring system that would contact someone in the event that a child didn't arrive at daycare as expected.
KidProtection.org allows a daycare provider to "check-in" kids online. The parent enters the child's daily arrival times and a list of contacts (phone numbers and email addresses). If the child doesn't arrive within 30 minutes of the expected arrival time, the program automatically calls the members of the contact list, one at a time until confirmation is received that a human has acknowledged the message.
While no method of prevention is fool-proof, KidProtection.org offers an easy-to-use interface that quite possibly could result in a simple phone call that could save a child's life.
